The GED consists of tests in writing, social studies, science, mathematics, and reading.
If you pass all the tests, you will receive a statement of your GED exam marks and your high school equivalency diploma. Many employers accept the GED in place of a regular high school diploma. Although GED is an alternative method of obtaining a high school equivalency diploma, it is not always accepted in lieu of Alberta Education credit courses for admission to higher education at post-secondary institutions. If you intend to apply to a post-secondary program, check with the institution to see whether GED is acceptable in lieu of academic credit course work. The GED exam is offered at designated writing centres throughout Alberta.
High School Equivalency
As an alternative to obtaining your high school diploma, Alberta offers a High School Equivalency Diploma. This is available to students 18 or older who have been out of school for at least 10 consecutive months.
The candidate shall obtain 100 school credits as described below
A minimum of 60 credits must be gained through accredited instruction, as follows
- 5 credits in high school math
- 3 credits in high school science
- 5 credits English 30-1 or 30-2
- 5 credits in one other 30 level course
- 42 credits in other high school courses
Additional credits as follows
- Additional high school course
- Additional approved adult education course
- Maturity (5 credits for age 21-24; 10 credits age 25-29; 15 credits for age 30 and over)
- 5 credits for extensive travel
- 5 credits for extensive reading
